Major Global Events in 2010

1. ICELAND: April 16: The volcano in Eyjafjallajokull glacier sends ash into the air causing major air travel chaos in most parts of Europe leaving passengers stranded at the airports.
2. PORT-AU-PRINCE, HAITI: January: A woman cries as she watches the body of her husband being dumped from a front loader into a truck as crews remove bodies from the streets in the aftermath of the devastating 7.0 earthquake that hit Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on January 12.
 3. MUZAFFARGARH, PAKISTAN: August 7: Marooned flood victims grab the side bars of a hovering army helicopter which arrived to distribute food supplies. Pakistanis desperate to get out of flooded villages threw themselves at helicopters as heavy rains intensified the suffering of the displaced people.

4. WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange speaks to the press on December 16, 2010, as he arrives at Ellingham Hall in Ellingham, Norfolk, the home of friend and Frontline Club owner Vaughan Smith, after being released from Wandsworth Prison. Earlier in December, WikiLeaks began releasing 250,000 diplomatic cables, detailing candid conversations between Washington and embassies around the world. On December 7, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was arrested on suspicion of rape.

5. NORTH-SOUTH KOREA BORDER: November: For the first time since the 1950-1953 Korean War, North Korea fires artillery shells into South Korea, killing four and injuring around 20 on a border island and prompting an exchange of fire with southern troops.
6. YANGON, MYANMAR, November 13 Aung San Suu Kyi smiles as she walks with National League for Democracy party members after being released from house arrest in Yangon. The democracy leader was freed after seven years under house arrest.
7. COPIAPO, CHILE: October 10: Chile’s President Sebastian Pinera (right) hugs miner Florencio Avalos after Avalos was rescued after being trapped with 32 other miners for over two months.
8. MANGALORE, INDIA: May 22: Rescue personnel, volunteers and onlookers are seen at the crash site of an Air India Boeing 737-800 aircraft which nose-dived upon landing in Mangalore, killing 158 people. A Court of Inquiry investigation concluded that the Air India pilot Zlatko Glusica was asleep when the plane started to descend.
9. DUISBURG, GERMANY: July 24: A crowd of revellers rushes outside a tunnel at the Love Parade “The art of Love” in Duisburg. A stampede killed at least 19 people after mass panic broke out in a tunnel at the techno music festival.
10. ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA, US: June 24: Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev (left) and US President Barack Obama share a meal of burgers for lunch at Ray’s Hell Burger restaurant during a summit.
